PROJECTS: "NOBODY'S HOME"
A Documentary on the Loss of Local Residents in Resort Communities

Description:
The best thing that Aspen can offer the world is a lesson for other communities. A lesson in protecting the fabric and character of their community. This YouTube clip is a 9-minute version of the film "Nobody's Home." The full film is 15 minutes; the DVD includes four, 5-minute case studies of Aspen, Basalt, Crested Butte and Switzerland.

The people who tried to protect and preserve Aspen in the first place never could possibly envision the great economic wave and pressure that was coming our way. Homes that were occupied by families that lived-and-worked in the community have become corporate retreats.

The average price of a single-family Aspen home is now $4.8 Million. Houses that were built for $10 per square foot today sell for $2,000 per square foot. The majority of employees for Aspen and within Pitkin County live "downvalley." They live in communities that are 15 miles, 20 miles, and 40 miles down the road. Can we still make the dream of living in a small town — in a beautiful place — in the mountains a reality?

Communities in every Western state have significant authority to manage growth in manner that protects what they value. That protects their community character. Do you still want a town for your children and grand children? If you do...think beyond appearances. Think about measures that protect the fabric and character of your community.

Interviewees:John McBride (The Sopris Foundation), Dwight Shellman (Pitkin County Commissioner 1972–76), Glenn Rappaport (Architect), Brent Gardner-Smith (Journalist), Cindy Houben (Pitkin County Planner), Chris Seldin (Basalt Town Council), Mick Ireland (Aspen Mayor), and Luther Propst (Sonoran Institute).

Running Time: 9 minutes, 10 seconds
